La Dolce Vita

The region of Lazio is the heart of many things Italian.  The regions capital is Rome which also serves as the capital of Italy and the centre of Roman civilization.  It is where you will find the Vatican City, an independent state within Rome, and the heart of the Roman Catholic church.

Rome can only be described as breathtaking.  Architectural wonders of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Spanish Steps, the Capitoline Hill, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona can all be experienced in a few hours of walking.  A wander across the bridge to the Vatican City will produce the wonder of St. Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and the Sistine Chapel.  If you plan your timing to be at the Vatican city for Christmas you could receive a blessing from the Pope himself.

A journey to the countryside outside of Rome will provide the opportunity to explore the underground catacombs, and the remains of the historical aqueducts.

Rome and the surrounding region also provide many great regional dishes.  Make certain you try the pasta specialties of Bucatini all'amatriciana, Spaghetti alla Carbonara, gnocchi alla Romana.  Meat dishes of Abbacchio Cacciatora, and Saltimbocca must be experienced, along with the original bruschetta or panzanella for the lovers of bread.
